(WEBINAR) Ask a Curator with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia

Join us for a candid conversation with Lauren Downing, executive assistant to the director, and Anthony Elms, Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator, both of the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Downing and Elms share insight into various art spaces, highlighting the roles of artists. In a conversation focused heavily on Q&A, Downing and Elms draw from their experiences curating and organizing exhibitions, from ideation through to the opening of a show, in order to help demystify how museums function.
After joining the ICA in 2014, Lauren Downing became the executive assistant to the director in 2019. She is a co-owner of Ulises, a local bookshop and curatorial platform. Downing holds a bachelor’s in art history, finance, and French, with a minor in international business, from Pennsylvania State University; and an MA in art history from the University of Pennsylvania. She was previously assistant director of Ion, a contemporary art and design gallery.
Anthony Elms has organized exhibitions at ICA including Milford Graves: A Mind-Body Deal with Mark Christman, Cauleen Smith: Give It or Leave It, and Christopher Knowles: In a Word with writer Hilton Als. Elms’s writings have appeared in many catalogs, edited collections, and periodicals. He has also independently organized exhibitions, including the Whitney Biennial 2014; Interstellar Low Ways (with Huey Copeland); and Sun Ra, El Saturn & Chicago’s Afro-Futurist Underground, 1954–68 (with John Corbett and Terri Kapsalis).
